THE BRIEF

A real bedroom upstairs, and a stair worth climbing to reach it.

The loft was boarded storage with a pull-down ladder and no headroom at the back. The Okafors needed a third bedroom for a growing family, and wanted the new stair to feel like part of the house, not an afterthought.

We put in a rear dormer on two steel beams to gain full standing height, then made the oak stair and fitted wardrobes in our own workshop. Ridge & Lane Architects handled planning, Brookfield Structures did the calcs, and our crew built it from scaffold to snag.

WEEK 04

Both steels are in and the dormer is weathertight ahead of Friday’s rain. Next week the electrics and plumbing go in, so expect a noisy Tuesday.

“The stair is the first thing people mention when they come round. We kept the house running the whole time and the mess never made it downstairs.”
