TRADES ON THE JOB

THE BRIEF

A whole house on a narrow plot, watertight before the autumn rain.

Mark and Helen Tate had planning for a family home at the end of a long garden, with neighbours on three sides and one narrow way in. Every delivery and every crane lift had to be planned to the hour.

We chose an open-panel timber frame so the shell could go up and be watertight in three weeks. Fernhill Studio led the design, Brookfield Structures detailed the frame, and our crew did the frame, roof, larch cladding and second fix.

WEEK 13

The frame is up and the roof is felted, so the house is now dry inside. The crane comes back on Thursday at 7am for the last lift, and we’ve told the neighbours.

“We expected a new build to mean a year of stress, and it simply didn’t. Every Friday we got a note saying what had happened and what was next.”
